"Power House"

Guys (and girls), I'm writing about a vauge memory I have of a show that wa son Nickelodeon which I believe was called "Power House". It was about a group of teenagers that live din some kind of community center and would solve crimes and/or mysteries. I believe it starred Georg Stanford Brown. Trouble is, I can find no reference of this show anywhere. its not even listed on the Internet Movie Database. Does anyone remember this program? I beleive it was on in the mid 1980s. The teenage girls in it were pretty hot, which ios probably why I remember it so well! ;-) Any info on this show? Thanks -Husnock 06:16, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

I don't think so. Michael 06:57, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Now since the Nick Wiki is out! we should start to transwiki some Nickelodeon-related articles there! --SuperDude 1 July 2005 06:03 (UTC)

Early History

I remember reading an article once that told of the history of Nick, how it was originally some Canadian Broadcasting project for a kids channel, and was run by some librarian but failed/was dormant for many years because it was too moralizing and boring to grab kids attention; then some new person came in with the idea of giving the sort of entertainment kids want, not what their parents want them to have... that lead to YCDTOT and then it took off from there. Just making the note here, researching this is on my todo list until I get a round tuit.... -Kwh 16:46, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Here's some links, looks like I've got part of the story right, these bits can probably be digested and rewritten to flesh out the history:[1][2] -Kwh 17:12, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Infobox

User Ddespie@san.rr.com has been adding and removing the infobox all week - so, given (imo) there isn't much useful information on there, should it stay?

Actually, it seems like User:Tregoweth is deleting the infobox after User:Ddespie@san.rr.com adds it. I'm not sure of either's motives, so I'm not getting into that.
Going through the Wikipedia pages for several other cable channels, it doesn't appear that the TV Network infobox Ddespie tried to implement is in widespread use (or that it's even recognized -- I didn't see it listed at Wikipedia:Infobox). I did find another infobox (again, not listed at Wikipedia:Infobox) used on the Sci Fi Channel's page that (I think) looked a little better.
Either way, I think this type of infobox has merit and should be allowed to stay, as they can provide a quick overview or reference in a standard format without a reader having to skim through the article.

Nickelodeon Japan article

The Article on the Japanese version of Nickelodeon must be created immediately. --User:Angie Y.

Well volunteered! - 9cds 18:55, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Thank you very much 9cds. Let me know when it is completed by contacting me at my talk page. --User:Angie Y.

I hope the article will be made soon. --User:Angie Y.

By "well volunteered" I meant by *you*. I know nothing about Nick Japan. It's not common curtosy to demand articles on a wiki: why not start it yourself, or request it in the usual way? 9cds 23:43, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Oh. Okay. I can do that. --User:Angie Y.

Toy line

Can Nick toys be added somewhere (Gak, Smud, Floam, etc.)?

Yeah, I guess that's a big enough page to create. But you'd have to do your research. Don't just suggest a topic. Help out w/ it! But you know, that sounds like a really good topic. Oh, and sign yer posts. Da Huuudge 15:50, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Nick Too

This article described Nick Too as "Nick on a three hour delay -- its west coast feed repackaged for east coast viewers", and that doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't it be the other way around? It's essentially the EAST coast feed delayed by three hours for WEST coast audiences. I changed this article to reflect this, but wanted to make sure that I've got the right idea. Christy747 21:05, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Trips To Universal

Why did Nick offer trips to Universal Studios Florida as grand prizes on their game shows? They had to get there in order to be on the show. That doesn't make sense. 206.211.69.253 17:55, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

I still don't get it. Is Nick cheap? 71.111.215.224 15:00, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Very. Just look at the quality of their products. (spits out yucky nick candy) (KinseyLOL 00:23, 4 May 2006 (UTC))

Just to actually answer your question, they wanted more profits, as usually participating in Nick's sweepstakes cost money (ex. buying spongebob crackers or something and sending in coupons), but apparently, they decided for some reason tnot to take them there anyway, just give them free admission for a certain number of days. And if this doesn't answer your question... well, we porbably can't help you from there.

It was for a return trip, so they can come back later.-TheVofSteel

Linking to nickelodeon.tv

I am removing the link to nickelodeon.tv for two reasons:

  1. It is nothing more than a page linking to other sites
  2. According to WP:EL: "Sites that require external applications (such as Flash or Java) to view the relevant content unless (1) it is the official site of the subject of the article (2) the article is about those media, or (3) the site is being cited as a reference."

Pinwheel?

I've seen references to "Nickelodeon" in newspaper articles from before 1981 (for example "Children's Programming Without Commercials" in the New York Times 3/4/79) so I think we need to clarify when the name change occured.

Nickelodeon Name 1979

I just did a search and found an old article from July, 16 1979 which talks about Nickelodeon, and does not refer to it as the Pinwheel Network. They obviously were using the name Nickelodeon before 1981. I can post the full article if interested, but here's an excerpt:

TV Talk: Warner Breaks News Ground With "Nickelodeon"

BYLINE: By TOM JORY, Associated Press Writer

It might have been as simple as collecting a library of worn cartoons and outdated kids' shows. But the people at Warner Cable Corp. decided to break new ground with "Nickelodeon," an enterprise they could call 'the first all-day, every day, something-for-every-kid programming package ever offered for cable TV."

And "Nickelodeon," begun in April, was by Warner Cable's standards an immediate success.

"We were planning on a million contracted viewers by the end of the year," says John A. Lack, Warner Cable's vice president for programming and marketing, "and it looks like we'll have two million by then."

"Nickelodeon," offered to the nation's cable TV systems by satellite, 13 hours a day on weekdays, 14 hours on weekends, consists of five different programs for young people of all ages.

The daily schedule includes "Pinwheel" for pre-schoolers, "Video Comic Books," starring heroes like Green Lantern and Space Ranger, "Nickel Flicks," featuring adventure serials from the 1930s and '40s, "By the Way," for kids 7-12, and "America Goes Bananaz" for teen-agers.

Cool. I wish I was around then. (KinseyLOL 00:21, 4 May 2006 (UTC))

Criticism

We need to add something like a critisim (sorry, can't spell that) section without looking silly. KinseyLOL 20:25, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Well... can you think of anything? If so, be bold and add something! -- 9cds(talk) 21:18, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
Everytime I add something, somebody deletes my edit. KinseyLOL 21:04, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
That's often because you need to cite your sources, if you just say "most people think nick sucks", it'll be reversed as vandalism.
I'll be more than happy to talk about specific examples if you want to say something, but aren't sure on how to do this :) -- 9cds(talk) 23:23, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I need your help so bad... KinseyLOL 22:05, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
I'll be happy to help - just say what you want to say on this page, or on my talk page. -- 9cds(talk) 22:14, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

I'd love it to be added that Nick pretty much hates the shows it makes. Invader Zim has a cult following and it got canceled. Fairly Odd Parents is one of it's most popular shows and it's been slated for canceling along with the other popular Danny Phantom. Many Avatar fans are also fearful that the same fate will come about due to the presidents deep seated hatred for anime. That's my critisim. H2P 04:40, 12 July 2006 (UTC) Now all nick really cares about is cartoons, mostly of which they hate. There is only a couple of live action shows on per day on the weekdays!

I deleted the "New Era" Critisms section for several reasons. First off, it looks to be written by a 4th grader. Secondly, most every criticism mentioned goes without any sort of example, with the next sentence making an entirely different criticism. Lastly, there are no sources. So overall, it simply doesn't deserve a place in the article, not in its current state anyway. I admit, I barely watch Nickelodeon at all anymore (I was a big fan of Rocko's Modern Life, Ren & Stimpy, etc.), but a section devoted to criticisms needs to be better presented. Cale 22:20, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

too much emphasis on cartoons

Nickelodeon produced many live-action programs. Clarissa Explains It All, Are you Afriad of the Dark, The Adventures of Pete and Pete are only a sampling of the live-actions shows Nick produced. Don't forget the many game shows, All That (which among other things launched the careers of Nick Cannon, Amanda Bynes, Kenan Thompson), Nick News (hosted by Peabody and Emmy Award winner Linda Ellerbee).

Other topics that need to be addressed here:

  • Nickelodeon's competition with Disney Channel and other
  • Nick's role in the increasing obesity and other health problems to increased tv-watching in children
  • other stuff i can't think of

-- Ttownfeen 20:57, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

You can't blame obesity on Nickelodeon anymore than you can blame it on Cartoon Network, the Disney Channel, or any other television station. Parents just like to put blame of their mistakes on others. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 22:37, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
I'm not saying that's my opinion; I'm saying that's an opinion that needs to be addressed. I'm just trying to think of ways to make this a more useful article. --Ttownfeen 21:57, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Opinions have no point on wikipedia articles in the first place. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 04:57, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
I disgree. In either case, we're getting hung up over nothing. My main point, really, is that this article talks about nothing but cartoons. Nickelodeon was and still is, I believe, so much more than that. --Ttownfeen 18:55, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Nickelodeon is a hypocrite, they talk constantly about their "Let's Just Play" program and healthyness, but 96% of their commercials are for video games and junk food. For shame. Moistener 19:37, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Re:critisim

I added a critisim section, someone has to fill it out.

An animated special

An hour-long special called "Bugaboo" or something was shown and I think we should metion it. Moistener 19:35, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

I thought that aired on the Nicktoons Network.-TheVofSteel

Why was the criticism removed without it being discussed here?

Nickelodeon has received a decent amount of criticism more recently from its older viewers. The current shows that Nickelodeon runs are much different in style than their previous shows and many of their more recently added shows, such as Catscratch or the soon to come McMeaty, rely on childish or disgusting humor. (I found a citation, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Phantom#Action_against_cancellation)
A much larger criticism comes from Nickelodeon's unresponsiveness to fan input. Many of Nick's more popular shows, such as Ren and Stimpy, Invader Zim, Danny Phantom, and The Fairly OddParents have been cancelled much to fan uproar.(‹The template Talkfact is being considered for merging.› [citation needed] A complaint arises that Nickelodeon relies too much on Spongebob Squarepants to keep its viewers coming back and because of this sacrifices other shows with potential.

I bolded some things that should've been taken out, but why the whole section? Blanking sections without discussing it on the talk page is considered vandalism. Abby724 19:49, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I wrote all that and I'll admit it is all a bit POV, but there is a lot of concensus to the last part if you read many Wiki pages of nick shows. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 20:07, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
I personally don't have much input for this article, except to revert vandalism and occasionally fix spelling. (My interest is mostly in what was on Nick in 1985-1986.) Nevertheless, it's pretty clear from the nature of the vandalism (usually anti-Nick statements, rudely worded), and comments on the talk pages, that a significant number of fans are angry. This probably should be mentioned, citing a reliable source, but stated in as NPOV a fashion as possible. Meanwhile, I agree that there doesn't seem to be much information here on non-cartoon aspects of the channel's history. Karen | Talk | contribs 17:17, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Okay, another attempt has been made to add a Criticism section, again without citing a source. Rather than remove it I cleaned it up a bit and added {{Fact}}. To reiterate my previous comment: it does seem that such a heading legitimately belongs in the article, but only if a reliable source can be cited. Otherwise it's original research and unsourced opinion. If anyone wants this section retained, it must be done properly. Please find at least one published, non-fan article to cite. Thanks. Karen | Talk | contribs 00:00, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't think that last fact can be sourced... unless you can find some random article out there about certain nickelodeon commercials. Abby724 00:56, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

List of shows

I feel that this article needs a section with a list of shows, there are so many that are not mentioned.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.135.205.196 (talkcontribs)

That's because there ARE so many shows. To list them all would take a full page. There are KEY shows that help to describe Nick and its tastes and its history, and those are what get listed. If you want to see the list, go here: List of programs broadcast by Nickelodeon. H2P (Yell at me for what I've done) 14:19, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Criticism

I don't mean to bother, but don't you think there should be a criticism section?

ironically, you have just created a criticism section. Yeah, if you know of some substantiated criticism, there probably should be such a section. Valley2city 21:58, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Nick Jr?

Shouldn't there be mention of Nick Jr. on this, the parent page? --Snograt 10:00, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Should there be a History section of the article?

Should there be?-TheVofSteel

Huh?

I don't get the 4th line of the history section. Wouldn't parents know about the daytime Nick since their children watch it? Carn29 20:03, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Origin of the word Nickelodeon

According to dict.leo.org Nickelodeon means in German "der Musikautomat" which is "The music machine" or "the music automat" in English; being music automats from past times, where you put in a nickel and can here a short song. These automates were mostly located at annual fairs / carnivals. Unfortunately I do not have more infos than that. Should I include that into the article anyhow?

I would also like creating a new article "Nickeodeon (Music automat)" or (Music machine), but the above info is quite sparse. Does anyone have more infos or a picture / drawing of such a machine?

Greetings, --Dietmar Lettau 10:35, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Big Help

I seem to remeber that Nick had something called Big Help in the 90's. It promoted cleaning the enviroment. Does anyone else remeber this? If so I think it should be added. ShadowWriter 17:48, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
